Title: Way of the Shinobi
Season: Winter
Writer: Yu-masu

---

Location: Tsukasa, Souma, and Shinobu's Room

Tsukasa: Hello, I have returned.

Shinobu: Ah, Suou-kun. Welcome back!

Tsukasa: You are holding quite a thick tome there. Might it be a technical manual, or some such?

Shinobu: It's an English-Japanese dictionary. I got a letter from a fan overseas, so I've been trying to use this to puzzle through it.

Tsukasa: A rather old-fashioned method, I must say. I do believe it would be considerably faster to use the translation functions in your smartphone, rather than look up words one-by-one in a dictionary.

Simply snap a photograph, select "Translate" from the options menu, and it will instantly turn into Japanese.

Shinobu: I do use the Translate function sometimes, but for fan letters, I'd rather try to read them myself.

I have only read through the first part so far, but it seems like the fan who sent this gets all their info about me from Japanese sources...

They write down all the words they don't know in a notebook, then look them up one-by-one.

So I, too, would like to rely on my own skills to read this letter. I want to better understand someone who has been trying so hard to understand me.

Tsukasa: Oh, I never imagined you had such a reason... I must apologize for meddling.

Shinobu: Don't worry about it. You were saying that for my sake, so no need to apologize!

Actually, if it's alright with you, Suou-kun, I'd love for you to help. There are some places where I don't understand how the words fit together...

I'll probably get overwhelmed if I keep going by myself.

Tsukasa: Of course, gladly. Which part is giving you trouble, exactly?

(Thirty minutes later)

Shinobu: ...Oh, hm... So this word is actually related to the sentence before...

Tsukasa: Yes. With this, the letter's overall message is growing clearer.

The sender appears to have been enraptured at first sight with Ryuseitai's "colorful" and "powerful" performances...

Then, as they followed Ryuseitai's activities, they became a great fan of you, Shinobu-kun.

Shinobu: They even got interested in ninjas while researching my speech style.

They asked me to teach them how to master ninjutsu, but it isn't easy to explain it in words, even in Japanese.

Trying to do it in English would make my whole brain explode, I think.

Tsukasa: ...If so, then why not make a ninja introductory video and release it worldwide?

A picture speaks a thousand words. It should be much easier to convey your message than through writing alone.

Shinobu: Oooh! This way I could also spread the joy of ninjas to all kinds of people! What a splendid idea ♪

I shall hop to planning this very soon! I'm very grateful for your help, Suou-kun...♪

Tsukasa: Hehe, of course.

Now let us continue translating... Oh?

Welcome back, Kanzaki-senpai. I see Otogari-senpai is with you.

Souma: Indeed. We had set off to the "room for theatrical viewings" earlier to enjoy a period drama together, but alas, 'twas already in use.

However, I had recalled the existence of a machine in this room that can play it for us, so I brought us here. Might we turn on the tele-vision?

Tsukasa: Certainly. Please, be my guest.

Adonis: Thank you. What are you two doing? Studying?

Tsukasa: Shinobu-kun received a fan letter written in English, so I am assisting with the translation.

Souma: English, you say! I have also been working on my English these days.

Allow me to help as well. I...kyan...speak-u...Englishu... ♪

Tsukasa: (Hrm... His English is, er, a tad stilted.)

(But Kanzaki-senpai is quite serious about his studies, and he looks very confident. Would it wound his pride were I to remark on his pronunciation?)

Adonis: Kanzaki, be careful with your pronunciation. It's "I can speak English".

Souma: Oho, you are as impressively fluent as ever, Adonis-dono.

Shinobu: Whoooa! You're good at English too, Otogari-senpai? Awesome...☆

Tsukasa: I-I can attest to my skills in English as well! "I can speak English"...♪

If you wish, Kanzaki-senpai, and Shinobu-kun, I shall hold an English lecture specially for you. Repeat after me...♪

(After a while)

Tsukasa: —As you can see, there are a multitude of phrases you can use for the simple act of expressing gratitude. ♪

Souma: Oh, hm... I have studied English extensively to prepare for my mock exam, but...

Such expressions were not in my phrase book. English is a truly profound subject.

Adonis: All languages are. It's been a while since I started studying Japanese, but I'm still not used to it.

By the way, Kanzaki, you don't want to watch that period drama?

Souma: ...Ah! It had utterly escaped my mind.

The one in the "room for theatrical viewings" did say 'twould be finished in an hour, so we may be able to use it ourselves now. Onward we march!

Adonis: Got it. See you, you two.

Shinobu: Yeah, have fun!

Tsukasa: ......

Shinobu: Your face is all red, Suou-kun. What's wrong?

Tsukasa: Shinobu-kun... I... What have I done...?

I had gotten ahead of myself and started an English lecture, when no one had asked it of me!

Shinobu: Ahaha. Getting embarrassed after realizing what just happened?

I was a bit surprised when you started going off, but it reminded me of back when we helped Kanzaki-senpai with his mock exam.

And thanks to you, I know how to express my gratitude with more words than just "thank you"! I'll use what you taught me in my activities going forward.

Suou-kun, "thanks heaps"...♪

Tsukasa: Shinobu-kun... Your pronunciation just now was perfect. Marvelous ♪

Shinobu: Ehehe, I'm glad.

Once I'm done writing a reply to this fan letter, could I ask you to polish it up? I wanna make sure the grammar looks okay.

Tsukasa: No problem at all. Leave the English to me! I am at your service anytime, should you wish...♪

---

T/N: "Thanks heaps" is not in my (West American) vernacular, and it sounds a bit lame/old to me. Apparently it's common in Australia? What kind of English has Tsukasa been learning, actually?!

T/N: The "mock exam" Shinobu mentioned refers to a brief appearance of him and Tsukasa in the Summer Bird Akatsuki event with 5* Souma. It's in that chapter that Tsukasa reveals he received "accelerated education for gifted children" when he was a child, and he uses that as an explanation for why his English is so good.
